Marble and liquid metal: the fusion you’ve never seen before

We are used to seeing marble and metal juxtaposed in many furniture and design objects. However, we often see them as two separate entities: marble for the tops and metal for the structures. The result is always elegant and refined, but what if we decide to ‘merge’ them in an innovative way?

During my meetings, I often get asked, “Why do I need metal finishes when I work with marble?”

In this article, we will explore how these two materials can be combined in surprising and innovative ways, resulting in unique designs.

The materials

The ancient Greeks, Romans and Mesopotamians were fascinated by the unique characteristics and splendour of marble. Many ancient marble monuments and buildings have survived to the present day, retaining their elegance. Despite its long history, marble is highly valued and used in the furnishing of public and private buildings.

The metal, esteemed for its durability, has been employed in a multitude of structures, weapons and antiquated tools. In the present era, it has become a significant phenomenon in the domain of furniture, where the art of craftsmanship is celebrated. This is exemplified in the creations of renowned designers such as Ingo Maurer and Piero Lissoni, who merge contemporary design with a spectrum of metallic textures, from the raw to the refined.

The fusion

We have now reached a decisive point in the creative process where we can begin to push the boundaries of conventional design. This will enable us to create designs that are not only distinctive but also challenge the conventional norms of design. One can consider the potential of combining two such distinctive and iconic materials, each with its own unique characteristics, to create a harmonious blend of unprecedented elegance and modernity.

The object of discussion here is not a mere dining table; rather, it is a work of art. The table, crafted from Verde Alpi marble, initially appears to be a conventional piece. However, upon further examination, it becomes evident that this is not the case. The remarkable transformation is achieved through a meticulous hand-carving of the marble, which is then filled with liquid metal. This process not only accentuates the inherent veining of the marble but also bestows upon the table a striking visual appeal.

With these innovative casting techniques, marble and metal are no longer just separate materials, but elements that can be combined to create extraordinary and distinctive furniture.
